Wellmune® Approved for Food Use in China
EAGAN, MN — March 7, 2011 — Biothera, the world leader in immune-enhancing ingredients derived from a complex carbohydrate called beta 1,3/1,6 gluco polysaccharide, announced today that the Ministry of Health in China has authorized the use of the company’s Wellmune WGP® as a novel food ingredient. The new designation allows immediate use of Wellmune WGP in foods and beverages throughout China.
Wellmune WGP is derived from the cell walls of a proprietary strain of baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). This unique ingredient is clinically shown to safely prime the immune system to keep your body healthy. Numerous studies published in peer-reviewed medical and science journals demonstrate how Wellmune WGP mobilizes billions of innate immune cells that are part of the body’s natural defenses without over stimulating the immune system.
“We are pleased to have an opportunity to offer our immune health technology to the people of China,” said Richard Mueller, chief executive officer of Biothera. “There are numerous applications in foods and beverages through which Wellmune can support the immune health and overall well-being.”
Wellmune WGP is an ingredient in food, beverage and supplement products in more than 30 countries. The ingredient has broad regulatory approval, including GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This unique ingredient’s patented, year-round protection is the culmination of more than $250 million in research with leading university and government institutions.
In 2008, Sino Biothera HK Ltd. based in Hong Kong and Beijing was established to distribute Wellmune WGP and the company’s other products in China.
