Dietitians and others interested in novel dietary immune boosting interventions to help protect against the effects of stress (like immune booster Wellmune) can now access our newest webinar, Nutrition for a Stressed-Out World. The complimentary webinar is Stressed womanpresented by John Blocher, Ph.D., of the Biothera team. We are pleased to make the webinar available through February 6, 2014, via the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition (SCAN) dietary practice group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (see Viewing Instructions below).

The topic is timely given the pervasive stressors in our lives and the fact that stress is on the rise and is associated with numerous health issues. While acute or short-term stress can enhance immune response, chronic or long-term stress can suppress immunity. A growing body of evidence links nutrition to immune health. In this webinar, Dr. Blocher provides a refresher on how the immune system works and surveys common dietary interventions. He will also present findings from human clinical research examining the role of Wellmune in the diet for boosting immunity to protect against the negative effects of physical and psychological stress.

The sports nutrition industry’s focus on muscle repair and growth overlooks a more basic need: keeping athletes healthy. Brian McFarlin, Ph.D., FACSM, an expert in exercise physiology, nutrition and immunology, has spent years researching the negative impact of intense exercise on immune health. Sports dietitian Dave Ellis, RD, CSCS, works with numerous college and professional athletes and teams on how to manage physical and lifestyle stress so they can maximize training and performance. In this webinar, these experts discuss the clinical research and how a functional ingredient can strengthen immune function to keep both elite and recreational athletes healthy. Click here for the webinar archive. The webinar was originally presented on June 26, 2013.

About the presenters:

Dr. Philip Calder

As part of our ongoing commitment to increase understanding of the link between nutrition and immune health, we are pleased to make available an archive of the first in a series of continuing education modules for dietitians! The webinar, presented by Philip Calder, BSc (Hons), PhD, DPhil, RNutr, Professor of Nutritional Immunology, University of Southampton Faculty of Medicine) was hosted by the Dietiitans in Integrative an Functional Medicine Dietetic Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

This one-hour webinar explored the immune system, a complex system of cells and tissues that protects the human body from invading pathogens. Dr. Calder, a leading nutritional immunologist, highlighted the growing body of clinical understanding about the role that good nutrition plays in immune health throughout the lifecycle, and the importance of immune health to overall health and well being. He shared the latest clinical insights on enhancing immune function and conclude with several examples of novel dietary immune interventions.

The Lifestages 2012 virtual conference featured a series a webinars, including one focused on the body’s changing immune health needs throughout the life cycle. This is an important topic because the human immune system undergoes significant changes as it develops, matures and declines. Current thinking is that each life stage can benefit from targeted dietary intervention.  A replay of this webinar is available here.  The conference was sponsored by FoodNavigator.com and NutraIngredientsUSA.com.

A panel of experts in immune health and food science will discuss immune system development and nutritional support at each stage: infants and children, young to mature adults, and seniors.

The presenters:

Hugh Lippman, Ph.D., Principal Nutrition Scientist, Pediatric Nutrition Institute, Mead Johnson Nutrition. Dr. Lippmann joined Mead Johnson in 2006.  Previously he worked in the nutritional ingredients industry.  Dr. Lippmann received his Ph.D. from Purdue University in the laboratory of Bruce Watkins.

Roger Clemens, DrPH, Chief Scientific Officer, The Horn Company, Past President, Institute of Food Technologists (IFT).  Dr. Clemens was appointed a member of the USDA 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee with primary responsibilities in food safety, dietary lipids and health.  In addition to being a fellow of IFT, he is a fellow in the American College of Nutrition, a fellow in the Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, and an active member of the American Socity for Nutrition.  Dr. Clemens received a BA in Bacteriology, an MPH in Nutrition and a DrPH in Public Health Nutrition and Biological Chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Don Cox, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Healthcare R&D, Biothera.  Dr. Cox has significant experience with the development and commercialization of natural products in the food, supplement and animal health industries.  He currently leads Biothera’s research and development efforts for the use of food-grade yeast beta glucans in functional foods, nutritional supplements, cosmetics and animal nutrition  Dr. Cox received a BS in chemistry and biology from Framingham State College, a Ph.D. in fermentation microbiology from Cornell University’s Department of Food Science and Technology, and an MBA from the University of Iowa School of Business Management.

The immune health opportunity in the sports nutrition segment was the focus of a new webinar sponsored by Biothera and hosted by Beverage Industry. A replay of the June 6, 2012 webinar is available here and will be archived for one year.

Protein, energy and recovery products have long dominated the $23 billion U.S. sports nutrition and weight loss market.  But like any great athlete, the industry is looking for the next product that will improve performance. Strengthening the immune system may be the key to achieving the Olympic motto Citius, Altius, Fortius (Latin for “faster, higher, stronger”).  Consider:

  • Staying healthy is critical to effective training. Research shows that high intensity exercise temporarily weakens the immune system. Hard workouts can create an “open window” in your body’s defenses that may derail training programs and performance gains.
  • Wellmune WGP provides broad-based protection. Clinical research with marathoners, cyclists and others enduring high physical stress demonstrated how Wellmune WGP can strengthen immune defenses before, during and after exercise.
  • Wellmune reduces upper respiratory infection (URTI) symptoms. In multiple clinical studies, Wellmune reduced the incidence of URTI symptoms that commonly afflict distance runners and other athletes.

Webinar:  Closing the Window on Stress-Related Immune Suppression

Nearly 75% of Americans recently surveyed say they are stressed out. Researchers have linked stress to numerous health problems, including suppression of the immune system.  Today life may be more stressful than ever but new research indicates that a natural ingredient may help alleviate the harmful effects of both physical and psychological stress.  This webinar focuses on the science behind the effects of stress on the immune system and immune health ingredient applications for foods, beverages and supplements. A replay of the September 14, 2011 webinar is available here.

As manufacturers rush to meet consumer demand for products with immune health benefits, the question becomes how to evaluate ingredients.  The marketing materials of most ingredient suppliers sound disarmingly similar.  Which ingredients are best? Equally important, which ingredients will withstand the increased scrutiny of the FTC and FDA? This webinar is designed to help manufacturers ask the right questions and better evaluate the answers.  The webinar originally aired on NutraIngredients-USA.com on June 30, 2010.
