Montana Center for Work Physiology and Exercise Metabolism Presents Firefighter Health Study

Human immune response in wildland firefighters study presented at American College of Sports Medicine

MISSOULA, Mont. — May 29, 2008 — The Montana Center for Work Physiology and Exercise Metabolism (Montana WPEM) presented a human clinical study today at the Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine, showing that wildland firefighters who consumed a yeast-based supplement, Wellmune WGP®, had far fewer – 23 percent – upper respiratory tract infections, compared to a similar group of firefighters taking a placebo.

Montana WPEM Director Brent C. Rudy said, “Wildland fire suppression crew health is a top concern. We are looking for a way to give the people, who do this demanding, intense work a nutritional ‘edge’–a way to stay healthy under very difficult, almost combat-like conditions.

“The results of the firefighters study show a strong statistical trend that subjects who used Wellmune WGP had better physical health – 23 percent fewer upper respiratory tract infections such as, fever, headaches, weakness, coughing, sneezing and stuffy noses,” Ruby said “The results are consistent with previous clinical research involving marathoners, individuals with high stress lifestyles and the general population.”

Wellmune WGP® Supplementation Alleviates Duration, Severity and ‘Down Time’ Due to Cold Symptoms

Research Results Presented at Experimental Biology 2008 Meeting

SAN DIEGO, CA. – April 9, 2008 – Wellmune WGP®, a natural immune-enhancing ingredient from Biothera, reduced the incidence of fever and eliminated the need for study subjects to miss work or school due to cold-like symptoms, researchers reported today at the 2008 Experimental Biology annual meeting.

Don Cox, Ph.D., Vice President of Research & Development for Biothera’s Healthcare Group, said, “This study’s results are exciting because they show the potential for Wellmune WGP to naturally enhance the body’s innate immune response to protect against and ameliorate the symptoms of something that every one of us encounters—the common cold. These results are consistent with numerous other immune health studies conducted with our ingredient, and indicate the real-life benefits that Wellmune WGP supplementation can provide.”

Prepared Foods, April 2008

Biothera’s clinical research demonstrates the ability of Wellmune WGP to protect against the harmful effects of stress, which may weaken the immune system and render individuals susceptible to health challenges.  Biothera recently conducted two clinical studies involving marathon runners and people with high lifestyle stress.  In both studies, Wellmune WGP reduced the incidence of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) symptoms and increased psychological well being.

Biothera Compounds Induce Immune Responses via Different Mechanisms

EAGAN, MN – March 19, 2008 – Biothera’s food-grade and pharmaceutical compounds induce innate human immune responses but through different cellular mechanism, according to research presented recently at the Keystone Symposia’s conference on Innate Immunity: Signaling Mechanisms. The research furthers understanding of how Biothera compounds work in the body.

Nutritional Outlook, February 2008

Wellmune WGP is named one of the top eight ingredients to watch in 2008.  The immune health ingredient is backed by clinical research showing that Wellmune provides immune system support during periods of high stress.  There is ample research demonstrating that physical and psychological stress can weaken the body’s immune defenses.

New Products, January 2008

The conventional wisdom used to be that immune health products were about as sexy as insurance – maybe even a notch or two below.  But growing consumer recognition of the importance of a healthy immune system to maintaining overall health has made immunity a leading driver in worldwide food and beverage innovation.

Research Results Presented at American College of Nutrition Annual Meeting

EAGAN, MN – November 6, 2007 – Wellmune WGP®, a natural ingredient that enhances the immune system, increased vigor and mental clarity while reducing fatigue and upper respiratory tract infection  (URTI) symptoms in marathon runners, researchers reported recently at the 48th American College of Nutrition Annual Meeting in Orlando.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 75 marathon runners (35 men, 40 women) ages 18-53 (mean age 36 years) who were recruited at the 2007 Carlsbad Marathon in California. Subjects were treated with Wellmune wgp, a natural carbohydrate that activates key immune cells to more quickly recognize and kill foreign challenges, or a placebo for four weeks. Wellmune WGP is a product of Biothera, a Minnesota-based biotechnology company.

In contrast with the placebo group, Marathoners taking 250 mg of Wellmune WGP daily reported a:

  • 22% increase in vigor
  • 48% reduction in fatigue
  • 38% reduction in tension
  • 38% reduction in stress-related confusion
