“Immune Health is Now on the Menu” is the message of our new outreach initiative to dietitians, a group of professionals who take an evidence-based approach to enhancing health and well being through modificaitons to diet and nutritional intervention. We’re launching our dietitian outreach at the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) in Philadelphia Oct. 7-9. FNCE is the flagship event of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association), the leading professional organization for dietitians in the United States.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been working closely with several dietitians in a range of settings to ensure that the resources and information we offer is actionable and applicable to clinical practitioners, corporate dietitians, researchers and more.

If you’re a dietitian, you’ll want to visit the section of Wellmune.com dedicated to your understanding of the role of nutritional interventions to support immune health. There’s a good primer on the immune system, answers to frequently asked questions, a glossary of immune health terms, among others. You’ll also find a link to the nine clinical studies demonstrating the immune health benefits of Wellmune WGP. Watch for more information coming soon on our series of immune health continuing education modules.

If you’re planning to attend the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo in Philadelphia, be sure to visit our booth, #1207, for more information and insight on immune health topics. Let us know what else would be of value in supporting your education needs and those of your colleagues and patients.

There are several opportunities to meet experts immersed in immune health and dietary interventions at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo 2012 in Philadelphia. If you’re a member of the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine (DIFM) DPG, be sure to pre-register and join us for the DIFM breakfast on Monday, October 8 for “Linking Evidence-Based Nutrition to Immune Health.”

Roger Clemens, DrPH, and 2011-2012 president of the Institute of Food Technology, will focus on the emerging evidence that suggests dietary intervention is important in maintaining healthy immune function. The presentation will offer a good refresher on the immune system, explore how nutrition can modulate immune function and play a role when formulating food products. The session will also illuminate the importance of understanding of mechanism of action and chemical structure of food ingredients. The event will offer insight into a model for conducting a critical evidence-based nutrition assessment of immune health ingredients, including antioxidants, fatty acids, probiotics and beta glucans.

Dr. Clemens will be followed by John Blocher, Ph.D., one of Biothera’s researchers who will introduce you to research on clinically proven Wellmune WGP®. The session is eligible for continuing education credit.

Wellmune is also planning several brief immune health education sessions in our booth, #1207, with Dr. Clemens on Sunday from 11:45 a.m.-noon and 12:45-1:00 p.m. and on Monday from noon-12:15 p.m. and 1:00-1:15 p.m. Preregistration for these in-booth presentations is not required.

This is an important topic because the human immune system undergoes significant changes as it develops, matures and declines. Current thinking is that each life stage can benefit from targeted dietary intervention.  A replay of this webinar is available here.  The conference was sponsored by FoodNavigator.com and NutraIngredientsUSA.com.

A panel of experts in immune health and food science will discuss immune system development and nutritional support at each stage: infants and children, young to mature adults, and seniors.

Dr. Lippmann joined Mead Johnson in 2006.  Previously he worked in the nutritional ingredients industry.  Dr. Lippmann received his Ph.D. from Purdue University in the laboratory of Bruce Watkins.

A recent story posted on SheKnows.com highlighted “Power Foods That Help Guard Your Health.” We were happy to see a section on immune support and even happier to see that Wellmune was included in the story as a great choice for enhancing the immune system without over-stimulating it.

As author Felicia D. Stoler, DCN, MS, RD, FACSM pointedly notes, “Grocery shopping today is like going on a treasure hunt. You can either load your cart with things that fill you up but don’t do much to keep you healthy, or you can reach for everyday superfoods that support your well being.”

She goes on to say, “Foods and drinks fortified with the right nutrients can help your immune system function at its peak and reduce a cold’s symptoms.” That’s a good reminder of the importance of everyday immune support as we approach cold and flu season. Click here to read the full story. How many of these superfoods are in your shopping cart?
